52.3676° N, 4.9041° E are the coordinates of Amsterdam, this series is made during the canal parade and the streets around it. Pride is one of the few public moments where visibility is chosen rather than risked.

Most of my work looks at people trying to stay themselves inside systems that press them inward, that make them smaller to fit. Pride is the rare moment when the same kind of pressure releases, and the question becomes what people do with the opening: how large to make oneself, what to put on, what to show.

The portraits hold two things at once. The exuberance, the colour, the refusal to apologise. And underneath, in some faces, something else: a hesitation, a held composure, the sense that the largeness of the gesture might be doing some of the work the person inside it cannot quite do alone. Costume as declaration and as shield.
