Love Letters from the War, with Nicole Segers and Claire Hoogakker
Love Letters from the War is based on nearly a thousand letters my grandfather Karl wrote to my grandmother Grete from the Eastern Front between 1943 and 1945. It is the portrait of an ordinary man trying to stay human in the middle of war.
The original letters, Karl’s drawings and family photographs are joined by new images: moments described in the letters but never photographed, generated with AI and then reworked by hand. One question keeps returning in the letters: why should the people he meets as a soldier be his enemies?
Photographer and mentor Nicole Segers, art historian Claire Hoogakker and I will talk about the letters, the working process and the questions the project raises.
